Setting Up A Business Development Bootcamp

Hello reader,

Can you list 20 things every business out there struggles with? If so you might be in a unique position to provide a service that solves many business training related difficulties. Even if you didn’t have 20 ideas off the top of your head the possibilities are still endless. What you’ll need at a minimum:

  • A bank of computers
  • A phone system that supports 5-30 calls at once
  • A variety of operating systems with specific business related software
  • A copier for training materials
  • A space that you can use freely on weekends or evenings
  • A list of specific trainers for a key skill (i.e. sales – marketing)
  • An automated rsvp system or a similar way of collecting interested parties
  • A course criteria
  • A price goal

A bank of computers

Chances are whatever course material you intend to introduce during the bootcamp will need at least some presentation material. During such a presentation, you can be sure that everyone in attendance will want the most hands on experience they can get. This is especially true for programming courses, and web development courses, where every individual will need to see similar problems at similar intervals for the course to be effective. A wordpress bootcamp for example is a guided experience with the end result being a working knowledge of how to set up a wordpress website from scratch.

A phone system

Whether you intend to do trial and error cold calling or simply need to be able to field leads as they happen in real time, nobody will want to wait in line for the phone to try out their new marketing materials or lead generation techniques.

A variety of operating systems

No modern office wants to learn something that they can not use on whatever equiptment they alreadt have so to be prepared for every possible office configuration you’ll want software that has compatible programs that do the same things on every operating system. (i.e. Microsoft Office is fairly compatible with LibreOffice, etc)

A copier

This can be circumvented with thumb drives or pre-written course disks etc.

Space

Whether it’s a lecture hall or a warehouse you’ll still want a space that can fit whomever you invite to teach, learn, and space left over for any impromptu guest speakers. (Be sure to observe fire marshal postings for room occupancy limits.)

Specific trainers to any skill being taught

You might be the best teacher of some of the skills you intend to include in this bootcamp but you shouldn’t do it alone. The best bootcamps come from having teachers for multiple key skills in any given field and it builds credibility to not have everyone pay to listen to just a few people. Fortunately key speakers are not impossible to find. Between authors, managers, experts, and developers, you’ll find a key speaker may charge as little as $50 per hour.

RSVP system

Even modern sewing circles rely heavily on automated rsvp systems, and if you currently run a website you have a pretty good chance that you can find a free plugin for just this sort of thing. If all else fails phone rsvps with a cutoff date are a good backup, but be sure to collect all payments in advance.

A course criteria

Are you teaching how to improve lead generation? That should then be the main focus of the bootcamp and every scrap of marketing material and training material needs to reflect that. Tests with pass and fail criteria are equally useful for the businesses who want to see if their investment mattered to their employees.

A price goal

If you start 6 months in advance and plan to raise $5000.00 you’ll need to charge $50 and get 100 people to attend, if on the other hand you want to charge a single group of say 25 people, you’ll likely need to settle for charging $100 per person and only making $2500.00 This might be where you need to decide how often these boot camps will have to happen to be a lucrative endeavor.

Making it work

Touring across country running bootcamps isn’t very likely unless you put lots of planing into that goal. However nothing is impossible. The main thrust of your efforts should be finding what businesses are happily paying for and tailoring your bootcamps accordingly.

This kind of service based business is not only quite possible to build from scratch, it is almost certainly a model that could be extended to include many other types of business like cooking classes, or even art classes. The laws in your state may govern how often you’ll need to file taxes based on the income you generate, and also what specific licensure you’ll need. But in some places a vendors permit or simple business license is adequate.

  1. When I originally commented I clicked the “Notify me when new comments are added” checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get three e-mails with the same comment. Is there any way you can remove me from that service? Many thanks!

  2. Have you ever considered about adding a little bit more than just your articles? I mean, what you say is valuable and everything. Nevertheless just imagine if you added some great images or video clips to give your posts more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with images and video clips, this blog could certainly be one of the most beneficial in its niche. Terrific blog!

  7. Today, I went to the beach with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is entirely off topic but I had to tell someone!
