There are many options to consider when building a website.
Between Joomla, Html, WordPress, Drupal, Elgg, and countless others, the two that stand out as the most popular seem to be WordPress and Drupal to non developers, though html still ranks very highly among newer and older developers untill they have plenty of experience with these Content Management Systems.
Each of these options have built in advantages and disadvantages, any of them could reasonably be used to build any kind of website. But in my experience the limitations of WordPress are in the community software add ons, and multi user blogging still has a long way to go.
Drupal is delightful to use but quite challenging for newcomers who might not want to spend days or even longer trying to figure out how to add some of the features they recognize from WordPress.
However the advantages of Drupal make it stand out for running a community site. Elgg allows some similar functionality but can be challenging to make pretty and as such is most likely going to need a serious overhaul to compete with WordPress.
WordPress stands out for simple blogs as the top pick, Drupal for businesses, Elgg for maybe colleges or BTB type sites, and Joomla most likely for e-commerce though it can be tailored to any of the above.
All of the best sites rely on good content, decent SEO, and proper exposure. So no matter what kind of website you build make absolutely sure that you know how to deliver each of those.
